Best vacation ever…

Today had pretty much all the makings of the coolest day ever. First, I saw the largest living thing on earth. Incredible! If you haven’t seen the giant sequoias, you must! They are just so insanely huge. I felt like a mouse. I took about a thousand photos, though of course you can’t get the whole tree in one shot. They are just so beautiful and to think that they’ve been alive longer than the entire christian era is crazy. Loved it! Then, I saw a bear! And a deer! What else? what, like I need more? Pretty amazing. I’d say that this was one of those things I really wanted to see before I died (not that I usually think of it that way). I wanted to see Botticelli’s Birth of Venus in person in Florence… did that. Wanted to see Stonehenge in person. Did that… Giant sequoias. check! I guess next is Africa. Oh! That reminds me… I saw zebras yesterday ! ? ! Near Hearst Castle… maybe they escaped. : )

Anyway, I’m exhausted and me and J are getting to the bickering stage of togetherness. Vacations are hard because it’s just the two of us and we can kind of get on each others nerves. On our 3rd day in San Francisco we met J’s cousin for coffee and then she drove us down to the golden gate bridge and then over it (she lives just on the other side in marin county) and back. It was nice to have someone else to talk to! And man is that bridge beautiful. Photos of it are gorgeous but seeing it right there… it’s really breathtaking. and man made! Yesterday I was kind of transfixed by the ocean driving up the coast. J was getting pissed off and nervous because the road is pretty hairy and very long… we didn’t think we’d ever get to a road that ran east.

Oh… so more trees to go on a pilgrimage to:

The widest is a Tule Cypress in Oaxaca Mexico

The oldest is a bristlecone pine in the white mountains of california (over 4,000 years old!!!)

The tallest is a coastal redwood on the coast of california. We’re going to play it by ear, but I’d like to leave Yosemite a little early and hit Muir Woods before we go. I want to see the redwoods too. : ( But I’m thinking Yosemite might be pretty damn amazing too and I won’t want to leave early. So we’ll see.

Largest pine is the sugar pine (never heard of them before but saw some today… HUGE pinecones. I felt like I was in middle earth).

We’re doing laundry now. Probably going to subway for dinner. I’d saved $1,500 for meals and recreation and don’t think I’ve spent more than $500. Our clocks are still off… eating at weird hours and going to bed really early. Well, I’m grimey. Time for a shower after a quick check of all my favorite blogs. : )
